Dreaded terrorist extradited from US to face trial in India

New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) Kulbir Singh Kulbeera alias Barapind, a Khalistani Commando Force terrorist was brought to India by a Punjab Police team last night after he was extradited from the US, ending nine years of untiring efforts by Interpol India and the Home and External Affairs ministries.

Kulbeera was wanted by the Punjab Police in about 20 cases of crime ranging from mass murder to snatching of weapons from the police, killing of police personnel and bank robbery, a CBI statement said today.

Kulbeera fled the country to US using a false passport under the name of Mahim Mehra. The US authorities in Los Angeles arrested him in April 1993. He applied for political asylum in the US which was denied.

In 1997 the process of extraditing Kulbeera to India was initiated which he strongly contested. But all his appeals were turned down because of information reaching US authorities that his pleas were not based on facts.

Eventually, the US Court passed orders granting India's request for his extradition.
