Chennai, June 19 (UNI) Dog days are ahead for the people of Chennai as the city continued to reel under oppressive heat wave, despite the 'Kathri' (peak summer season) ending in the last week of May.

Weather office sources said Nungambakkam recorded 38 degree C and suburban Meenambakkam 37.6.

The sources attributed the intensive heat conditions due to inactive South West monsoon.

'Normally the sweltering heat will continue till the second week of July, unless there is good monsoon. This time the monsoon is not active in Karnataka and Kerala, following which Chennai has been experiencing heat wave conditions, the sources added.

The mercury level in the city had been hovering around the 38 degree C for the last ten days, with no signs of it coming down.

The present conditions are expected to continue for the next couple of days unless the monsoon becomes active. 'The possibility of temperatures coming down solely depend on the South West Monsoon'.
