Centre to develop Settwe port in Myanmar

Petrapole(Indo-Bangla border) Jun 19 (UNI) The Centre is planning to develop the Settwe port in Myanmar to make it an alternative access point to the north east.

Union Minister of State for Commerce Jayram Ramesh said the Centre would be spending around 103 million dollars in three years to develop the port and make Kaladan river navigable.

The new port would make direct connectivity between Vishakhapatnam and Kolkata to Mizoram in the northeast thereby bypassing Bangladesh, he said.

The RITES has been engaged as the implementing agent.

Mr Ramesh said the Indian foreign sceretary is now in Rangoon to discuss the matter with the Myanmar government.
