New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) Ridiculing former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's reported advice to the BJP to learn from the Left the art of overcoming anti-incumbency and retaining power, the Congress today said the saffron party should first play the role of a ''constructive opposition.'' ''The BJP should first learn to be a constructive opposition, giving up the disparate personal agenda of its leaders,'' Congress spokesman Rajiv Shukla told reporters.

Instead of carrying out a scurrilous campaign against Congress president Sonia Gandhi and trying to ape the Left, the BJP should focus on issues of national importance, he said.

The Congress also came down heavily on the Samajwadi Party regarding the remarks of its general secretary Amar Singh making fun of Ms Gandhi.

Seeking to make fun of Ms Gandhi for her declaration in her nomination to fight the recent Rae Bareli Lok Sabha bypoll that she did not own a house or a car, Mr Singh had offered to provide her with these facilities in the SP-ruled Uttar Pradesh as she was the ''daughter-in-law of the nation.'' Rather than wasting its energy on such non-issues, the SP government should emulate the tradition of the Gandhi family in donating their personal property, such as the Anand Bhavan, to the state, he said.

The recent announcement of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar about his intention to will his property to the state was another gesture the SP could follow, the Congress said.

''The SP should learn to give something to the needy people instead of resorting to some cheap humour,'' Mr Shukla said.

The Samajwadi Party should also explain to the people how some of its leaders had a fleet of expensive imported cars and private jets, he added.
