Accused dies after alleged suicide attempt in police custody
Beed, Maharashtra, June 19 (UNI) A 55-year-old accused, who allegedly tried to commit suicide in police lock-up, died during treatment at the Kaij government hospital today.
Informing this, Deputy Superindent of Police Pralhad Sonwane said, the accused -- Ganesh Bhowale -- remanded to police custody, allegedly tried to commit suicide around 0630 hrs at the Kaij police station.
Bhowale, who sustained serious injuries in his suicide attempt, was rushed to the Kaij rural hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at about 1400 hrs, Mr Sonwane said, adding the police has registered an offence under section of 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in this connection.
Police had booked the accused under 395/397 of the IPC for 'dacoity' registerd with the Kaij police station. He was arrested by the anti-dacoity squad of the Beed police on June 3. The accused was remanded to police custody till June 19, by a local court.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Movement (HRM) has condemned the incident.
In a statement issued here, HRM District President Ashok Tangde raised doubts over the suspicious death of the accused and demanded A magistrial inquiry into the incident.
