We want to go further than last 16, says Tenorio
BAD KISSINGEN, Germany, June 18 (Reuters) Ecuador should set their World Cup sights high after starting with two victories, striker Carlos Tenorio said today.
''For us it's not enough to be in the second round. We must go further,'' Tenorio told reporters.
Ecuador, in their second World Cup finals, were not particularly fancied to qualify from Group A but lead Germany on goal difference ahead of Tuesday's match against the host nation in Berlin.
Tenorio, 27, who scored in the wins over Poland and Costa Rica, said the team had raised expectations at home by clinching qualification for the last 16.
''The World Cup is very important,'' he said. ''If you go out in the first round everybody forgets about you.'' Ecuador are likely to face England or Sweden in the second round.
Like most of the squad, Tenorio said he had no clear preference although he recognised England looked the stronger team.
''The monsters are scarier from far away than closer. Now we are closer we will see how frightening they really are,'' he said.
Tenorio, who is likely to miss Tuesday's match because of an ankle injury, has a dream to be top scorer in the World Cup.
''I think if I score 10 or 11, I am number one,'' he said optimistically.
Tenorio also hinted he might discuss a move from Al Saad with the Qatari club's president when the tournament ends.
''Qatar pays a lot of money for Tenorio,'' he said. ''If another team wants him they will have to put the same offer or more.'' REUTERS AY PM1908
