Special yagam at Sabarimala temple

Pathanamthitta, Kerala, Jun 18 (UNI) Athirudra Maha Yagam was held at Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple with traditional gaiety and religious fervour today.

It was for the first time that Sabarimala witnessed such a rare ritual based on vedas, barring Atharva.

The yagna began with an Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam. Vedic scholars extolled the twelve suns chanting vedic hymns. Tantri Kantaru Mohanru offered pujas to holy waters brought from Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Krishna and Kaveri, and then Kalasams were filled with it.

Then hyms from Ria, Yajur and Sama Vedas were chanted by 190 vedic scholars led by V Jangunatha Janapadikal, head of Veda patasala at perur, Coimbatore.

The Homam which began at 0600 hrs continued till 1230 hrs.

Then Abhishekam was performed on the Ayyappa idol with the holy water in the Brahmakalasam and sandalpaste. Hundreds of devotees thronged Sannidhanam to witness Athirudramaha Yajnam.
