Thiruvananthapuram, June 18 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today said the Government would take all steps to ensure merit and social justice in the educational sector.

Talking to newspersons after a meeting with Vice-Chancellors on the proposed bill on self-financing professional college fee structure and admission, he said the Vice Chancellors in the State had assured their full support and cooperation for the success of the initiatives taken by the government.

Though the previous Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Government had promised a norm of 'two self financing colleges equal to one government college', the Government, instead of keeping promises, threw students to private managements for exploitation, he alleged.

Mr Achuthanandan said the Government was accountable to the students as many of them were struggling to pay huge fees in colleges. Higher education should be made available to the common man to ensure social justice, he added.

Education Minister M A Baby, who also attended the meeting, said the Vice-Chancellors had assured that they would implement the new policy, which enables the financially backward students to secure at least fifty per cent of seats in self financing courses under the Universities, by providing Government fees.
