Vadodara, Jun 18 (UNI) A major fire broke out in the multi-storeyed Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) office here today, causing severe damage to the office records and property worth lakhs of rupees.

Fire brigade sources said the blaze started from the fourth floor of the eight-storeyed SSNNL building at around 1500 hrs and as many as 11 fire tenders and hydraulic platforms were pressed into service to fight the blaze.

Being a Sunday, no one was injured in the incident.

The fire, which is believed to have had been caused by a short circuit, engulfed the entire fourth floor housing computers, data, and Narmada dam drawing sections.

SSNNL sources said, besides the fourth floor, properties and important documents in four other adjacent floors of the Narmada Nigam building also suffered huge damage during the fire fighting operations. The fire brigade personnel took two hours to control the blaze.

Chief fire officer H Taparia said the whole building could have caught fire had they not doused water from all sides with the help of hydraulic platforms.

''When we reached the spot, smoke was billowing out of the windows in four floors. And after it was detected that the fire was limited to the fourth floor only, fire fighting measures were taken up in a planned manner. About half-a-dozen window glasspanes were broke open to enter into the locked building,'' Mr Taparia said.

According to Sardar Sarovar Punarvasavat Agency (SSPA) commissioner M S Dakur, who visited the spot to take stock of the situation after the blaze was brought under control, SSNNL executive engineers and other senior officials were investigating into the cause of the fire and the damage caused to the multi-storeyed building and other office property.
