Surinder Kaur was a 'legend', says PM
New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) The death of Punjabi folk singer Surinder Kaur was a ''great loss'' to the Punjabi culture, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said, condoling the sudden demise of the 'Nightingale of Punjab'.
Describing the singer as a ''legend'' and ''trend-setter'', Dr Singh said the loss was indeed difficult to fill.
The death was a grievous loss not only for India, but also for lovers of Punjabi folk music all over the world, he said in a condolence message to her family and admirers.
''Her music exhibited her commitment to basic human values,'' Dr Singh said adding she was an artist with progressive ideas and a literary mind, living a very simple life.
''I hope that her immortal voice will motivate other artists to practice the right Punjabi folk music tradition,'' the Prime Minister said.
