Reading week celebrations from tomorrow

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 17 (UNI) The Kerala Government, in association with the P N Panicker Foundation, will organise a week-long ''Vayanavaram'' (reading week) in the state from June 19 to 25, Education Minister M A Baby said today.

He told a press conference here that 'reading week had been organised during the last ten years in memory of P N Panicker, who laid the foundation for the literacy movement through the message of ''Vayichu Valaruka'' (read and grow). Nearly 90 per cent of schools in the state had been covered by the programme.

Mr Baby will inaugurate the reading week at a function here tomorrow.

A sepcial assembly would be held in all schools in the state on the inaugural day and Panicker's famous message of ''Vayichu valaruka and chinthichu vivekam neduka'' would be read out, he said.

From this year onwards, the Foundation would start Village Knowledge Centres and as a pilot project the scheme would be started in Attingal and Kanhangad educational districts, he added.
