Kochi, June 17 (UNI) The principal of the School of Engineering of the elite Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and six others were suspended today for the fraudulent admission of a student, who had not even cleared the school exams, for the B.Tech (Electronics) course last year.

University officials said the action was taken against Principal P T Rajan Nambiar and six others following a preliminary inquiry by a sub-committeee of the university syndicate.

The other suspended functionaries are Asst. Registrar C V Sreedevi, section officer I Johnson, assistant Jayalakshmi, examination dept. section officer V Sheela, assistant B K Bejoy and security guard M K Venugopal.

In the major lapse, which came to light recently, T Sreelekshmi of Palakkad was admitted to the B.Tech course even though her name did not figure in the Common Admission Test (CAT) rank list for the BTech course.

Sreelekshmi, who had not even cleared her Plus-Two examination and had, according to reports, secured only 18 marks in Maths in the school leaving exams, had got admission into CUSAT on the basis of forged marksheets.

She has already been suspended from the university.
