Virender sets new 400 m record

Chennai, Jun 16 (UNI) Five meet records were set on the second day of the sixth Indian Oil Junior National Federation Cup Athletics Championships 2006 here today.

In the boys 400m, Virender Kumar Pankaj of Uttar Pradesh stole the show clocking 47.16 seconds to erase the previous record of 47.65 seconds set by Anmol Ratan Tete (Jhar) at the 2004 Jamshedpur meet.

Andhra's P.Trnath created another meet record in 1500m event clocking 3:54.09. The previous record 3: 54.21 in the event was set by Pritam Bind (Uttaranchal) in Chennai three years back.

Bhupinder Singh of Punjab logged 6577 Points to post another record in Decathlon (Previous best of 6151 was by K. Shankar of Tamil Nadu. The up and coming Jhuma Khatun of Bengal clocked 4:30.95 to set a new meet record in the girls 1500m (previous best 4:38.37 by Abha Rani of Maharashtra) while Karnataka's Shilpa Sunder amassed 4567 points to rewrite the record books in the Heptathlon (previous best of 4028 points by D. Karpuramala (TN) set in 2004.
