Tension eases in Karauli, vigil up
Karauli, June 16 (UNI) The situation in this town was brought under control today after tension generated over disrespect being shown to a religious book.
Police said 500 policemen had been stationed here and patrol vehicles were keeping a tight vigil of the place. They held flag march in several areas of the town.
The police arrested 12 people yesterday in connection with the incident and also for indulging in loot and arson.
Chaos erupted on Wednesday when people of a particular community took exception to the disrespect shown to a religious book at a tea vendor's stall. Several shops were looted and damaged and shopkeepers were beaten up.
A policeman was also beaten up and his revolver taken away.
Meanwhile, people from another community set an autorickshaw on fire and damaged several others. The uproar continued for two hours.
