'SP raising Amitabh's issue out of nervousness'

New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) The Congress today charged that the Samajwadi Party leaders' obsession with the income tax case of super star Amitabh Bachchan is, in fact, their "diversionary tactics seeing the certain defeat in the coming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections staring them in their face."

"There is a fear in the Samajwadi Party ranks of losing elections and therefore they are indulging in this drama to divert public attention,"Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told mediapersons here.

Mr Singhvi said the Samajwadi Party leaders including its General Secretary Amar Singh were in a dilemma and confusion unable to decide what to do and what not to do. Amitabh Bachchan, he said, had already clarified that Income Tax Department was doing its duty and not harassing him as regards the income tax dealings with him and yet Amar Singh was harping on Amitabh Bachchan being harassed by the IT Dept.

Amitabh, he said, had also clarified that no notice had been received from the IT Department for an expensive spectacle allegedly bought by him and the IT Dept had also clarified that it had not sent notice for spectacle. "What is ailing the Samajwadi Party leaders is any body's guess." Mr Singhvi said while Amitabh had not thought it fit to take legal action against the IT Dept for the notices sent to him,the Samajwadi Party is obstructing functioning of Government offices and resorting to strong arm tactics against the IT Dept.

Similarly,he said,the notice sent to Amitabh's wife Jaya Bachchan was pretty old. "Then what is the mystery of the timing for raising this issue now,"he asked and said it was a sense of fear gripping the minds of the party's rank and file about the prospects of losing next Assembly elections .

Mr Amar Singh, according to Mr Singhvi, has himself clarified that he was not acting on behalf of Amitabh Bachchan."Then what is this hullabaloo about", he asked.
