Sikkim Assembly to meet tomorrow

Gangtok, June 16 (UNI) Sikkim Legislative Assembly Speaker D N Takarpa today preponed the coming session of the Assembly by two days.

The House, which, as per the earlier notification, was to meet on June 19, would be held tomorrow.

The Assembly was being convened to reintroduce and pass three Bills, returned by the Governor with certain remarks for reconsideration of the House.

The three bills -- Sikkim State Legislators Appointment to different Authorities Bill, Sikkim State Public Service Bill and the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Members (Removal of Disqualifications) Amendment bills -- were passed by the special session of the House on June 10 last to exempt its members from disqualification for holding offices of profit.

As many as 17 MLAs of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front party were issued notice by the Election Commission of India for holding Office of profit following petitions made by various political parties to the Governor for their disqualifications.

The Assembly was being hurriedly convened as the EC had set June 23 for the state government to respond to its notice on the office of profit issue.
