Police registers case againt Sukhbir Badal

Faridkot, June 16 (UNI) Acting on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court the district police has filed a FIR against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) general secretary and MP Sukhbir Badal and four others.

The case, registered under sections 392,202,323 and 341 of IPC at Kot Kapura police station. Besides Mr Badal, others named in the case are SAD leader Jagdish Walia, BJP leader R K Bansal and Mr A S Rai the then SSP of Faridkot.

It pertains to the man-handling of Ajay Verma, photographer of the Punjabi daily 'Desh Sewak' during the Lok Sabha elections in 1999. At that time Mr Sukhbir Badal was the SAD candidate from the Faridkot constituency.

In his complaint to the police, Ajay Verma had alleged that he was manhandled and beaten up by the Akali supporters and his camera was snatched away from him.

Despite the complaint the police did not register any case against Mr Badal and others. Mr Verma then approached the High Court and the Court directed the district police to investigate the matter and register a case.
