Narvekar elected unopposed as GCA executive committee

Panaji, June 16 (UNI) Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice president Dayanand Narvekar was today re-elected unopposed as the president of the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) executive committee for a third overall and second consecutive term.

The 12-member panel, led by Mr Narvekar, won the last time.

Barring a single change with Manoj Bandodkar making way for Dr Ravindra Parulekar, the entire panel was also elected unopposed.

Apart from Mr Narvekar, Vinod Phadke, Chetan Desai, Akbar Mulla, Sanjay Kanekar, Suryakant Naik, Prasad Phaterpekar, Ulhas Naik, Manohar Naik, Sharad Chopdekar, Dr Ravindra Parulekar and Amaresh Naik (life memeber) are the other members of the panel.

Mr Narvekar, who is also the State Law Minister, said the new committee will take charge on June 25.

He said the construction of the proposed 50,000 seating capacity cricket stadium at Guirim, Mapusa in North Goa was the top priority for him.

''Once the land was acquired, the stadium will be ready within three years period. We are targeting the 2011 World Cup tie as the opener at the venue,'' he added.

The funds for constructing the stadium were no problem with BCCI now coming forward in helping the state assocation. They have received Rs 10 crore as the first instalment, he said.

Mr Narvekar also said that the adivsory committee formed to study the stadiums in India has recommended the Hyderabad stadium model for Goa.

The indoor pitches at Duler, Mapusa and Margao costing Rs 15 lakh will be ready by the end of this month, he added.
