Mild quake hits southern Philippines, no damage

Manila, June 16 : A mild earthquake rattled the southwestern Philippines today but there were no reports of damage or injury, an official said.

The 4.9 magnitude tremor rattled Zamboanga province at 0324 am (1924 GMT), a spokesman for the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) said.

The quake was unrelated to a recent spate of ash explosions at Bulusan volcano in the central Philippines, the spokesman said.

Bulusan, one of the six most active volcanoes in the Philippines, has been belching ash over nearby villages and Philvolcs has placed it under a precautionary alert level 2.
