HPU declares merit list; Students demand enquiry

Shimla, June 16 (UNI) Brushing aside protests by action committee of aggrieved students and parents, the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) today released the final list of selected candidates for medical, dental and Ayurvedic colleges on the basis of pre-medical test (PMT) conducted on May 26.

The merit list was released late last night after the one man enquiry committee, headed by former university registrar A R Chauhan, cleared the university of any irregularities and any paper leak, HPU's registrar V D Sharma said.

He said the final list had been released and the matter was closed as far as the university was concerned, adding that the university authorities had all along maintained that there was no lapse or irregularity on their part.

The enquiry report had only vindicated their stand on the issue, he said.

Meanwhile, the enquiry officer in its report said all precautionary steps had been taken to conduct the PMT examinations smoothly.

Reports in various newspapers, which forced the university to order an enquiry, were based on conjecture, hearsay and rumours that were being spread by vested interests, the report said.

It said as far as various advertisements, which had appeared in national dailies in the name of counselling for admission to various medical colleges in the state by some outside agencies were concerned, the matter should be referred to the state government for further investigation to avoid any exploitation of students by these agencies.
