Elections to Graduates, Teachers constituencies in K'taka

Bangalore, June 16 (UNI) The biennial elections to the Karnataka Legislative Council will be held tomorrow to fill three seats each from the Graduates and Teachers constituencies.

As many as 59 candidates, including Higher Education Minister D H Shankara Murthy and Science and Technology Minister K Ramachandra Gowda (both BJP), were in the fray for the six seats. Mr Murthy (Karnataka South West) and Mr Gowda (Bangalore) were seeking re-election from the Graduates constitutencies.

The elections were being held to Bangalore, North-East and South-West Graduates constituencies and Bangalore, South-East and South teachers constituencies.

All the major political parties, including the Congress, BJP and JD(S), have fielded their candidates in the elections, besides independents.

The elections were necessitated following the term of the sitting members coming to an end.

Polling of votes would at start 0800 hrs and go on till 1600 hrs.

Counting of votes would be taken up on June 19.
