LOS ANGELES, June 16 (Reuters) Conjoined baby sisters from California, fused from breast to pelvis, were successfully separated and in serious but stable condition yesterday doctors said.

Renata and Regina Salinas Fierros, born in Los Angeles in August, were moved to intensive care Thursday after separation surgery and reconstruction of the chest walls and pelvic regions at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

"Seeing the girls today, beginning to wake up and move and respond is great excitement for us all," said Dr. James E. Stein, who led the 80-member medical team.

Doctors split the girls' liver and intestines, giving part of the small intestine to one and most of the large intestine to the other.

The girls, whose parents are Mexican, will remain in the hospital for several weeks. They should not suffer separation anxiety, due to their young age, and will be able to lead normal lives with physical therapy and some additional surgery.

"I fully expect they will be able to walk independently, without assistance," said Dr J Dominic Femino, a member of the surgical team. "This morning they are both moving their legs." REUTERS SHR RS0955
