60 defence personnel pass IIM-L management prog

Lucknow, June 16 (UNI) Sixty serving and retired defence personnel have successfully completed a specialised management programme from the premier Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L).

The 'students' of the 'General Management Programme for Defence Officers' were today distributed their certificates by Major General Harwant Krishnan, Director General, Resettlement.

The six-months module is structured to enable the defence personnel start second career after retirement from the services.

Addressing the valedictory address, Mr Krishnan emphasised upon inculcating entrepreneural spirit among the retiring defence officers rather than become job seekers.

The management course fee is Rs 1.20 lakh, of which the individual officer contributes Rs 40,000 and the rest is borne by the defence ministry.

IIM-L Programme Manager Vinod Arora said there were 12 women defence officers, who undertook the course this year. The programme started in 2005, he informed adding, the next course was due to start in January 1, 2007.

''Although, IIM-L was the first to start the such a course, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Indore and MDI (Gurgaon) are the other B-schools, who have also started similar modules,'' he told UNI.

There are two specialisation areas in the General Management Programme, operations and HR. The candidates have the option to choose between the two verticals.

Interestingly, three women defence personnel figured in the merit list of five candidates headed by Nitish Pandey.

''We have ICICI, Ebony and Kargill coming to IIM-L for campus recruitment this time for the fresh passouts,'' Mr Arora mentioned.

The names for the course are recommended by the Resettlement department to the IIM-L, which screens them according to set parameters to gauge their aptitude and learing potential.
