First private Medical College at Hapania

Agartala, June 15 : The Medical Council of India (MCI) has approved the first ever private Medical College in the North-East being set up at Hapania near here by G-Net.

State Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty said this would be the second Medical College in the state after the Tripura Government Medical College.

Mr Chakraborty said the first year MBBS course in the private Medical College would start from the current educational year. The first year MBBS course had already started in the Government Medical College, which had already got MCI approval for running the second year course.

He said the two Medical Colleges would fulfilled the aspiration of the budding doctors in the state.

The private Medical College to be known as Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital got the approval of the MCI after three inspections.

G-net had signed an agreement with the state government in 2004 for setting up the private Medical College at Hapania. The private Medical College is now awaiting the letter of permission from the Union Health Ministry.

There will be 200 seats for the students in the two Medical Colleges. Of the 200 seats, 140 will be filling by the students from within the state. The rest of the seats will be filling by the students from All India Pool.
