Modi urges to Centre for NOIR in Gujarat
Gandhinagar, Jun 15 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today urged the Central Government to set up the National Institute of Oceanographic Research (NIOR), to explore and research on ocean biology along the coastal line of Gujarat.
Mr Modi claimed that his Government was ready to extend all possible contribution and support to the Central Government for protection and research on ocean biology in the coastal areas of Gujarat.
Mr Modi was speaking at a two-day inaugural function of the National Conference on 'Protection of Oceanic Biology', organised at Gir Foundation here from today, an official release said.
Emphasising on the need to set up NIOR in Gujarat, Mr Modi said that when the places like Goa and Andaman Nicobar have NIORs, setting up such an institution in Gujarat would definitely contribute to the nation's oceanic treasure.
The Chief Minister also emphasised on taking help from the Indian Navy in protecting oceanic biology and developing marine bio-diversity management in Gujarat.
He also cautioned against the negative propaganda of the developed nations, against development in developing nations, in the name of protection of the environment and natural habitate.
Speaking on the occasion, Forest and Environment Department, Government of India's Secretary Pradipto Ghosh said Gujarat can take the frontal position and provide an instance to other states in striking a balance between protecting marine eco-system and development.
The state could achieve this position with participation from corporate sector, Mr Ghosh added.
Others who spoke on the occasion included state forest and environment minister Mangubhai Patel, the release added.
