Nagpur, June 15 (UNI) The help centres of the Income tax department set up on the concept of public-private partnership as announced by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram in his budget speech for 2005-06, today started functioning in the five districts in Vidarbha region.

The help centres at Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal and Chandrapur have become functional with the formal inauguration of Nagpur Centre by the chief IT Commissioner Suprakas Lahiri at the Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce.

Inaugurating the centre, Mr Lahiri said the object to set up the help centres was to bridge the gap between tax payers and the Income Tax Department. These centres would intend to land a helping hand to the small tax payers who might not be in a position to have access to expert advice in matters of filling up their returns of income, challans, computation of income, calculation of taxes, application for PAN and other related works.

The centres would be manned by the persons in the private bodies as they were set up in their premises and the works would be done under two officials provided by Income Tax Department, he added.
