HC issues notice to State Education Minister Purke

Nagpur, June 15 (UNI) The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court today issued notices to State Government, Education minister Vasant Purke and state education director in connection with granting permission to 1495 new schools to be run on non-aided basis.

The education department of the Maharashtra Government through its order dated May 16, 2006, had granted permission to new 1495 schools to be run on non-aided basis. Of the 1495 schools, there are 322 Marathi medium primary schools, 377 english medium middle schools, 445 middle schools and 351 higher meddle schools.

The notices were issued on a writ petition, filed by secretary of Amravati-based ''Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Sanstha Mahamandal'' Mahendra Somwanshi, challenged the Government permission submitting that while granting permissions the Government had not followed the norms laid down by the High court in a case in 2004.

The petitioner also demanded that the Government should disclose that of the 1495 schools, how many schools belonged to political leaders.

The High Court's Nagpur Bench consisting of Justice D D Sinha and Justice R C Chavan, directed the respondents to file their reply to the notices within two weeks.
