Germany's European jinx ends against Poles
DORTMUND, June 14 (Reuters) Germany ended their 10-year jinx against fellow-European opponents with a last gasp goal from Oliver Neuville today when the World Cup hosts beat Poland 1-0 in Group A.
Substitute Neuville scored from close range one minute into stoppage time when he slid home a cross from the right.
Poland finished the match with 10 men after midfielder Radoslaw Sobolewski was sent off for getting a second yellow card in the 75th minute but held on against relentless pressure.
Germany had not beaten another European team at the finals of either the World Cup or European Championships since their victory over the Czech Republic in the final of Euro 1996.
Germany top Group A with six points from two games and are well placed to qualify for the second round. Poland are without a point.
