Five, including four police officials, gunned down in Karachi

Islamabad, June 15 (UNI) A group of unidentified assailants gunned down five people, including four police officials, in Karachi today.

The slain officials, including deputy superintendent of Karachi central Jail Ammanullah Khan Niazi, were entering city's bustling Sadar market when eight unidentified gunmen riding four motircycles opened fire on their vehicle, killing all of them on the spot.

A civilian was also killed in the firing, which was very intense and created panic in the entire area with traders closing their shops and running in search for safer places.

Another official vehicle carrying police guards also got damaged in the firing, which injured at least seven persons, three of them seriously.

City police chief later told reporters that it was a target-killing aimed at assassinating Mr Niazi. However, he said motives behind the incident and identification of the attackers are yet not known, adding that a probe has been launched to track down criminals.
