World-French newspapers disappointed by Les Bleus display

PARIS, June 14 (Reuters) French newspapers were critical of Les Bleus' dull display after they drew 0-0 against Switzerland in their World Cup Group G opener.

''Heatwave'', ran the headline of sports daily L'Equipe with a picture of Fabien Barthez's decisive block on a Daniel Gygax header on 65 minutes.

''It is possible to recover from a goalless draw in the first match providing that you have the means to do it. And France have shown no guarantee they had,'' the paper wrote.

''No rhythm, no inspiration, barely a chance,'' said news daily Le Figaro.

''Out of breath,'' said Liberation, referring to the average age of the team, with only two players under 28.

''With a 0-0 draw against Switzerland, France have missed their entrance,'' the paper added.

''It's not in the pocket,'' said daily Le Parisien.

''Pathetic enough to make you cry,'' slammed the tabloid France Soir.

France, who had promised they would be ready for their opener, have yet to score a goal in a World Cup final since Emmanuel Petit netted the third goal in their 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the final on July 12, 1998.

Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has squandered many chances, leaving unused substitute David Trezeguet sitting in frustration on the bench.

France take on South Korea in their second Group G game on Sunday before playing Togo in their last group stage encounter.
