Bangalore, June 14 (UNI) The Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA), the apex body of SSIs in the State, will hold a two-day Industrial and Technology exhibition from June 16 to showcase the development and capabilities of the sector, KASSIA President Harish P Hegde informed today.

Addressing newspersons here, he said over 200 SSI units would exhibit their products and showcase their core competence. The exhibition would be made an annual affair as the event got tremendous response from the industry, the Union and State Governments and financial houses.

Mr Hegde said that although the displays would mostly pertain to SSI products, there would be a few stalls of medium and major industries which have been suppoting SSI units in the State.

He said the exhibition would also be a platform for portraying the growth pattern in moffussil areas and secondary towns. Such events would not only create an awareness among the public about SSI products, but also help in finding new markets for them. This exhibition was expected to result in franchising, vendor development tie-up arrangements, joint ventures and diversifications, he added.

To a question, he said SSIs in Karnataka have provided over two million jobs and registered a turnover of over Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 60,000 crore. Over Rs 20,000 crore worth goods and services were being exported by the sector in the State. Karnataka was in the forefront in the fields of recision engineering, auto components, electronics, quality equipment and components, pharmaceuticals, engineering plastics, readymade garments and textiles, printing and packaging.

Mr Hegde expressed concern that SSIs in Karnataka were facing crisis of infrastructure facilities, lack of financial support and access to international market. During the last six to seven years, over 80,000 SSI units had been closed down mainly due to inadequate financial resources. The State Government owed them over Rs 295 crore in the form of incentives and subsidies and KASSIA was making all out efforts for early disbursement of the arrears.

He informed that the Karnataka Government had decided to set up three more industrial estates to house SSIs in and around Bangalore in an area of over 7,000 acres. The land had been identified and KSIIDC appointed as the nodal agency to acquire the lands.
