Raj Babbar alleges REGS scam in UP
Varanasi, June 14 (UNI) Cine actor and Lok Sabha MP from Agra Raj Babbar today alleged a scam in the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (REGS) -- one of the most ambitious projects of UPA government -- in Uttar Pradesh.
Interacting with newspersons here, Babbar claimed UP had claimed 75 per cent central grant under the project that guarantees a minimum of 100 days employment, by making fake beneficiary cards.
''During my recent visit to the Halia development block of Mirzapur district neighbouring Varanasi, I have come across many such cases, where fake beneficiary cards have been made to claim 75 per cent central grant.'' he added.
The remaining 25 per cent grant under the project is to be arranged by the state government.
Mr Babbar alleged the 'Mid-Day Meal' scheme in UP primary schools was also not reaching the deserving as a liquor baron had been entrusted with running the scheme in several schools. Besides, the scheme was also underway in at least 1,500 schools, which neither had any teacher nor student, he added.
