Moderate Quake measuring 5.1 rocks Sumatra
New Delhi, Jun 14: A moderate intensity earthquake struck off the western coast of Northern Sumatra Island, Indonesia, this afternoon.
The quake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale, occurred at 1254 hrs (IST), the India Meteorological Department said.
Its epicentre lay at 03.6 degrees North Latitude and 94 degrees East Longitude off the western coast of Northern Sumatra.
On December 26, 2004, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake along the coast of Sumatra, triggered a tsunami which struck coastal regions of 12 countries along the Indian Ocean.
Approximately 300,000 people died or are missing from the disaster.
