Clash erupts in Baghdad during security sweep
Baghdad, June 14: Clashes erupted between gunmen and security forces in Baghdad today, a Reuters reporter said, after Iraqi troops stepped up security in the capital in a bid to root out insurgents.
The shooting took place in the northern Adhamiya district, a Sunni insurgent stronghold and one of the capital's most dangerous areas. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.
Gunmen carrying AK-47 automatic rifles were blocking roads with large stones and tree trunks and ordering civilians to leave, the Reuters reporter said.
People were seen fleeing the area and fierce shooting was heard, he added.
