Children rhymes scrapped from MP syllabus

Bhopal, June 14 (UNI) Six popular English rhymes -- including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Johny Johny Yes Papa -- are no more a part of the Class I syllabus in Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has dropped the rhymes from this academic year.

State School Education Minister Narottam Mishra justified the MPBSE decision stating that the rhymes encouraged western culture.

The government intends to incorporate such material in the syllabus that would inculcate a feeling of patriotism among students.

Mr Mishra said the decision was taken on the basis of recommendations by a committee formed to review syllabus.

Meanwhile, educationists described the decision as unnecessary and said the government must give attention to improving quality of education.

The task to increase number of students in schools and fill in vacant posts of teachers must be accorded priority.
