Chetan Anand, Anup Sridhar, Arvind Bhatt progress in Malaysian Open
Kuching, June 14 (UNI) The Indian quartet of Chetan Anand, Anup Sridhar, Arvind Bhatt and Rohan Castelino sailed into the second round of the men's singles event in the Malaysian Open Badminton Tournament here.
However, the trio of Anand Pawar, P Kashyap and qualifier JBS Vidyadhar made an early exit, losing their first round matches in contrasting manner.
In the women's singles, Saina Nehwal will kick off her campaign against Dutch Jie Yao.
In men's singles, Chetan Anand forfeited the advantage against Malaysian shuttler Daren Liew and conceded the second game before bouncing back to carve out a 21-16, 17-21, 21-16 that set up his second round clash with Brit Andrew Smith.
Arvind Bhatt, on the other hand, returned from the brink of a disaster and erased the first game deficit to edge past Malaysian James Chua 25-27, 22-20, 21-14. He meets Denmark's Kenneth Jonassen in the second round.
Rohan Castelino, too, came from behind to upstage Chen Wei Lim 19-21, 21-18, 21-19 and he faces Yan Kit Chan of Hong Kong in the next round.
Anup Sridhar overcame early jitters to tame Frenchman Jean Michel Lefort 22-20, 21-11 and the national champion now meets Chong Wei Lee of Malaysia.
Among others, P Kashyap was beaten 14-21, 17-21 by Yogendran Krishnan of Malaysia, Kay Bin Yeoh downed a gritty Anand Pawar 13-21, 21-15, 21-14 while qualifier JBS Vidhyadhar lost to Sairul Amar Ayob 20-22, 17-21.
