Authorities warn against killing of frogs for its meat in Goa

Panaji, June 14 (UNI) Considering the indiscriminate killing of frogs for their meat, the state wildlife authorities have warned the people against killing frogs for serving them as delicacies in the state, attracting stringement punishment including imprisonment.

''Frogs are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Catching, killing and selling frogs or serving frog meat in eating places contravene the provisions of the Act and attracts stringent punishment with fine and imprisonment,'' chief wildlife warden said yesterday.

In view of the ban imposed by the Centre, he has solicited co-operation of the people in protecting and conserving the frogs.

Frogs are believed to be incarnation of Goddess Laxmi and are known to bring prosperity in the form of rains. They mainly feed on insects, thus controlling the spread of insect and vector-borne diseases such as malaria, filaria and encephalitis.
