Army to develop model towns in Manipur under operation Sadhavana
Imphal, Jun 14 (UNI) The army has adopted some villages in Manipur to make them as model towns, according to GOC of 57 Mountain Division Maj Gen EJ Kochekkan.
Maj Gen Kochekken told reporters Singhat in Churachandpur district was adopted under operation Sadhavana to covert it as model town.
Works have already started and about Rs. 3 crore was earmarked for the scheme.
Churachandpur district once was a major hub of many underground outfits before army flushed out militants in operations. After the operations, the National Highways Nos 150 and 53 were now safe, the army officer claimed.
He said similar projects would also be taken up at Moirang in Bishenpur district, Kangpokpi in, Senapati district.
The areas controlled by the militants were heavely mined and so far about 117 Ieds have been safely removed.
Commenting on the law and order situation, he said the military was in favour of having uniform law in the state. The Armed Forces Special Powers Act which provides extraordinary powers to army was not promulgated in greater Imphal areas hence there was strong possibility of militants converging at those places. However, the military will share information with the police if it came to know about presence of militants.
