Transporters stages demonstration and rallies across state

Mumbai, June 13 (UNI) Over five lakh vehicles affiliated to the Maharashtra Truck-Tempo-Bus Mahasangh today joined the nationwide strike called by All Indian Motor Transport Association in protest against the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices.

The Mahasangh President Prakash Gawli said the members of the association today took out protest rallies across the state and staged demonstration in front of the Collector's office and representatives of the association later submitted a memorandum to the Collector.

Mr Gawli said the association has stated in the memorandum that if the government failed to reduce fuel prices, the transporters will go on an indefinite strike.

He said the hike in fuel rates was abnormally high, which increased the operational costs.

Mr Gawli further said the transporters in the state paying the highest sale tax of 34 per cent. Sale tax should be reduced to bring it on par with other states, he added.
