Srinagar, Jun 13 (UNI) Security around the headquarter of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) at Exchange road was further tightened this afternoon following intelligence inputs about militant plans to target it.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel guarding the BSNL complex, including main telephone exchange, were checking all vehicles and also frisking pedestrians.

Official sources said additional CRPF personnel were deployed in and around the complex to thwart any militant attempt to attack it.

They said some messages were intercepted suggesting that militants were planning to attack the complex, also housing the office of the General Manager BSNL.

Militants in the past made a number of attacks on the BSNL building by firing grenades. However, the grenades always missed the intended target and exploded at a distance without causing any damage.

However, a number of telephone exchanges were damaged in blasts since the eruption of militancy in nineties. A telephone exchange at high security Cantonment area of Sonawar was totally damaged in a fidayeen attack in 2002, disrupting the telephone network of Army.
