Police kills top ULFA leader

Guwahati, June 13 (UNI) Asom Police today achieved a major success when they gunned down a top ULFA leader and killed him in an encounter in the heart of the city.

The police after being tipped off followed a four-member ULFA team, which had entered the Guwahati city. The ultras had taken shelter at Narakasur Hills adjacent to the Guwahati medical College Hospital.

Getting wind of the police raid, the ULFA members escaped but in the ensuing encounter which lasted for more than an hour one militant was killed while the rest managed to escape.

One detonator, one pistol, four rounds of ammunition and some incriminating documents were recovered from the militants. This is the first major counter attack by the security forces, as ULFA almost got a free run in the past few months.

The body of ULFA leader has been sent for a post-mortem. Asom police is on the hunt for the remaining three.
