Lovers commit suicide in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 13 (UNI) Anguished by opposition from their families to their marriage, two young lovers allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the river Jhelum here last evening, police said today.

According to police, Amreen (19) and Sajjad Ahmed Dar (24) were in love with each other for some time and faced strong opposition from their families over their decision to marry.

Distressed over this, Amreen, a resident of Koker Bazar here, met Sajjad last evening and after some discussion over the matter, she jumped into the river at Amira Kadal, police added.

They said soon after, Sajjad, a resident of Ikhrajpora here, in an attempt to save his beloved too jumped into river, but drowned.

Police recovered their bodies from the river this morning.

Police have registered a first information report in the matter and later handed over the bodies to the respective families.
