Srinagar, June 13 (UNI) Hundreds of Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) activists protested against the hike in petrol and diesel prices here today as part of the National Protest Day by the Left parties.

CPI(M) activists carrying banners and placards assembled at the office of the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir to protest against the price hike in petroleum products.

The procession was led by Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) Secretary Mohammad Yosuf Tarigami.

The activists shouted slogans against the steep increase in fuel prices and demanded a rollback.

The protestors said the increase in diesel prices will affect transportation costs and have a cascading affect on inflation.

Addressing the protestors, Mr Tarigami said the CPI(M) has strongly opposed the hike in petrol and diesel prices announced by the Centre recently.

He termed as ''unconscionable'' the fifth successive hike in petroleum products prices in a little over two years. ''The steep increase in petrol and diesel prices is going to impose an unbearable burden on the people who are already suffering from rising prices of all the essential commodities,'' Mr Tarigami added.

He lashed out at the UPA government for ''imposing unbearable burden'' n the consumers by effecting repeated hike in petroleum products and cautioned it to desist from such moves or be ready to face the wrath of the people.

Mr Tarigami said the CPI(M), which supports the UPA government from outside, was not consulted before making such decisions.

''The UPA government cannot take us for granted. We had suggested measures which, if considered, could have certainly applied some checks and balances over the petroleum prices,'' he added.

The CPI(M) leaders later submitted a memorandum to the Divisional Commissioner demanding a rollback of price hike.
