Karnataka to introduce helmet rule from July 31

Bangalore, Jun 13 (UNI) Karnataka Cabinet tonight decided to make wearing of helmets compulsory by two wheeler riders and the pillion riders from July 31, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Basavaraj Horatti announced.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Mr Horatti said the decision was taken following the High Court Order in this regard. The High Court had directed the state government to make wearing of helmets mandatory in 2004. However, due to various reasons, the implementation of the order could not be ensured so far.

He also said the cabinet approved purchase of new buses by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and other road transport corporations in the state. The corporations would be permitted to raise Rs 130 crores funds for the purpose, he added.
