Heat to stay on England, forecaster warns

HAMBURG, June 13 (Reuters) England will play Trinidad&Tobago in steamy weather conditions and not on a cooler evening as first forecast because a low pressure system has stalled.

Joerg Kachelmann, chief meteorologist at Germany's ARD TV network, first predicted ''England-style weather'' for the 6 p.m.

(2130 hrs IST) match on Thursday in Nuremberg but today revised that to a more Caribbean outlook with heat and high humidity.

''The small cold air pocket has stalled in the west so it's probably going to be hot for England after all,'' he told Reuters.

England said they suffered in the heat for their Group B win over Paraguay on Saturday. Temperatures hit 29 degrees Celsius on Saturday in Frankfurt, where England played.

Kachelmann said they would almost be as high in Nuremberg on Thursday, peaking at 5 p.m. before cooling slightly. Humidity will, however, be higher, he added.

Northwest Germany could face heavy rain and thunderstorms tomorrow. The Germany-Poland match in Dortmund could be a repeat of the ''water battle'' of 1974 when West Germany beat Poland 1-0 on a rain-soaked pitch in Frankfurt.

''There is a probability of severe weather in northwest Germany tomorrow -- heavy rain and thunderstorms,'' he said.
