Govt to revive Budha Pushkar Lake

Ajmer, June 13 : The Rajasthan government is making efforts to revive Budha Pushkar Lake and conserve the main Pushkar lake as the rapid desertification of the western part of the state is devouring its water bodies.

The continuous dust storms raging in the area have resulted in deposition of mounds of earth at a number of places in the city, making it resemble a barren desert. So much so, the old Pushkar lake (better known as Budha Pushkar Sarovar) has been obliterated with not a drop of water left in it.

The Budha Pushkar lake is famous as Lord Ram had performed the last rites of his father King Dasrath here.

The worrying factor is the rapid desertification has not left the main Pushkar lake untouched as it has become difficult to maintain the water-level at 4-5 feet in this once 40 feet deep lake.

The state government plans to dig the lake, stop the deposition of earth mounds, plant trees in the area and install a water treatment plant. The plan also involves redirecting the rain water flowing into the Luni river towards Budha Pushkar and Pushkar lake.
