Five died in monsoon rains in Tripura

Agartala, Jun 13 : At least five people including three children were killed and many injured in a series of landslides and lightnings triggered by monsoons rains in Tripura, official sources said today.

Dharmanagar and its neighbouring areas since Sunday were lashed by heavy rains, that caused flood like situation and triggered series of landslides in North Tripura.

At least five people including three children- aged between 5 to 13- have died and many injured following landslides and lightnings in Churaibari area in the past 24 hours.

The mudslides also damaged Nationaql Hihway No 44.

Many areas of Dharmanagar and its neighbouring areas have been submerged by the rain waters while Juri and Kakri rivers were in spate. Many government offices, hospitals were water logged, sources stated.

Four persons including two children have died when huge mud fell on them from a nearby hill while a 13-year-old-boy died when lightning struck him during fishing.

Vehicular traffinc on the NH No 44 was suspended yesterday for a long time as landslides blocked a number of places due to heavy rains. Though works to restore the high ways took up on war footing immediately, it was not not known yet if the road was cleared. But the state government undertaking Tripura Road Transport Corporation buses (TRTC) left here for its destinations towards Silchar and Guwahati in Asom this morning, sources said.

A large number of families from Dharmanagar and its neighbouring areas took shelter in safer places as their houses were submerged by flood waters. The administrtion there had taken up all possible measures to help the affected families.

Kailahahar, the headquarters of the North Tripura District also facing a flood like situation as it also facing rains. Embankments on the river Manu near the district town caused breaches at many places causing a panick among the residents.
