First anniversary of Sohela shootout
Tonk, Jun 13 (UNI) The farmers of Tonk are the rightful beneficiaries of water from the Bisalpur dam, said Congress leaders at the first anniversary of the Sohela shootout today.
Last year, five people were killed at Sohela when police opened fire on protesting farmers demanding drinking water.
The administration today promulgated Prohibitory Orders under Section 144 in Sohela. The anniversary function was organised at nearby Jhirana village.
Congress leaders, addressing the function, said the people in Tonk have been displaced due to the construction of the Bisalpur dam and as such they should have the first rights on Bisalpur's water.
State Congress president B D Kalla said Rs 10,000 would be provided to those nine injured in the Sohela shootout, who have not been compensated by the state government.
Dr Kalla also announced Rs 11,000 donation for building a memorial in memory of those killed in Sohela shootout.
Congress leaders namely Ramnarain Choudhary, Dr Hari Singh, Union environment minister Namo Narain Meena and Congress spokeswoman Dr Param Navdeep Singh were present on the occasion.
