Bangalore, June 13 (UNI) Cobra beer, an Indian beer which went on to carve a niche for itself as a premium beer the world over, was launched in the city today.

Cobra beer was first brewed at Mysore Breweries in 1990 and thereafter exported to England for seven years. The launch of Indian-brewed Cobra was, therefore, a homecoming for the beer that began its journey from Bangalore, Cobra Indian Beer Pvt Ltd (CIB) Regional Director Perses Bilimoria told reporters here today.

He said the beer, launched by Mr Karan Bilimoria, CBE, DL, Founder and Chief Executive of Cobra Beer, to meet Britain's need for a smooth beer to accompany Indian food, had become one of the fastest growing beer brands in the United Kingdom and was being exported to 40 countries.

The brand had bagged a number of awards, including two Monde Selection Gold Medals. ''Cobra is brewed to an authentic Indian recipe, using natural ingredients. With its unique blend of barley malt, maize and rice, it was extra smooth and less gassy, he said.

CIB, which had launched its range of wines in India in 2002, would rebrand its wine products and reposition it in the market during the next two months.

The company would make substantial investment in brewing capacity, new markets and introduce new products. After gaining a foothold in the Indian market, the company now sought a more aggressive presence across the country's markets, Mr Bilimoria added.

CIB Managing Director Poonam Chandel said Cobra had already made its strong presence in the states like Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. It was recently launched in Pondicherry and would be soon launched in the rest of the country.

The beer market in India was around 100 million cases per annum out of which Karnataka had a share of 10 MC. The market was growing at a pace of four-five per cent and a better growth was expected in the coming years. The company, which had a technical collaboration with Mount Shivalik, one of the largest independent breweries in the country, brewed most of its beer in Behror in Rajasthan. It would now set up its own breweries in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, she added.
