BA cuts some bag allowances under luggage revamp

LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) British Airways said on Tuesday it would reduce the maximum amount of free luggage some passengers can check in, but ease some other charges and restrictions under a revamp of its baggage rules.

BA, Europe's third-largest airline, said the maximum weight for free checked-in bags on European and domestic flights would be cut by 9 kilograms, to 23 kilograms, from October.

However, weight restrictions would be removed on hand luggage but size limits would remain. Passengers will be allowed to carry one standard-size bag and a briefcase or laptop computer bag on all flights.

BA said it would continue to offer free checked-in luggage.

Rival budget carrier Ryanair introduced charges for check-in baggage earlier this year in a push to cut costs and speed up check-in.

The airline said it was also revamping its excess baggage charges from October, which it said in most cases would reduce existing charges. It will offer discounts on excess baggage fees if they are paid online before checking in.

BA commercial director Martin George said the revamp was aimed at simplifying the current system, reducing queues at airports and bringing them in line with government regulations.

The changes will be phased in from July.

BA shares were 2.3 percent weaker at 338-1/2 pence at 0956 GMT.
